University of Port Harcourt don, award-winning poet and currently a Fellow at University of Oxford, United Kingdom has emerged the best poet in the English-speaking part of Africa.
Obari Gomba won the Pan-African Writers Association’s (PAWA) poetry prize 2022 worth $2,000, announced in a virtual ceremony on March 3, 2022, after beating other shortlisted five Nigerian poets who were shortlisted alongside him; Chrysanthemum For Wide Eyed Ghosts by Echezonachukwu Nduka; A Poetic Diary Of The Coronavirus Epidemic by Tanure Ojaide; Where The Light Enters You by Servio Gbadamosi and Akimbo In Limbo by Olumide Olaniyan.
Gomba won with his collection, ‘The Lilt Of The Rebel’.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Professor Owunari Georgewill in a statement by his aide, Sam Kpenu has congratulated Dr Gomba for bringing honour to the University through his high-impact scholarly work and urged him to sustain the tempo.
“Gomba’s The Lit of the Rebel book is a rich collection of 108 poems on diverse human issues. Gomba’s poetry is bold, candid and unafraid of controversy.”
