The family of professor Omiete Briggs, the returning officer for port Harcourt federal constituency 2 in the Saturday, February 25 presidential and national assembly election wants Nigeria’s inspector general of police IGP, Alkali Baba, to ensure her safety following alleged threats to her life.
Addressing journalists on Monday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, the husband of the returning officer, Ammonia Briggs said his wife and family have been receiving anonymous death threats through telephone calls and text messages.
The dust is yet to settle on the February 25 presidential and national assembly elections, especially in Rivers State, where the family of the returning officer for port Harcourt federal constituency 2, Professor Omiete Briggs is alleging threats to her life for refusing to alter the results of the polls.
Professor Omiete’s husband, Amonia Briggs, therefore, wants Nigeria’s number One police, Alkali Baba and the Independent National electoral commission INEC to ensure that his wife and family members were safe and protected.
Chairman, of civil society organizations in Rivers State, Enefa Georgewill, described the death threats on Professor Omiete Briggs as a sad development.
Though INEC has released the national assembly results in Rivers State, that of Port federal constituency 2 was suspended and the electoral umpire insists that the suspension followed
reports of irregularities.
