Ishiukwa people in Ogba Egbema Ndoni local government area of Rivers State have called on the Rivers state government to construct a road that will connect the community to Ndoni, to aid the transportation of their farm produce to other parts of the state.
They said the only available road in the area has not been motorable for decades and that they will soon lose their status as the biggest yam market in the state because of the poor state of the road which has affected business negatively as well as their production capacity.
Rivers state is the treasure base of Nigeria because of the abundance of oil and gas resources for Ishiukwa people in Ogba egbema Ndoni local government area of rivers state.
They say they are the food basket of the state because the community is home to the biggest yam, potato, okro, and pepper in the state.
The traders converge on Ishiukwa every four days for business as Farm produce from there and other surrounding communities are usual transported to Rivers state and other parts of the region through Imo state as there are no motorable roads to ndoni central
Despite the flourishing tuber business to the people, they have the challenge of poor social amenities to contend with which has limited their productivity.
They urged the Rivers state government to give them a befitting road and other social amenities to enhance productivity since the Nigerian Agip Oil company has abandoned them despite making so much money from resources in their land.
Ishiukwa people and other Communities along the banks of the River Niger are predominantly farmers and fishermen and it is important that the government ameliorated their sufferings and not add to them.
