In a bid to curb sea piracy in the maritime corridors, pipeline vandalism and criminal tendencies in the Niger Delta Region, the Ijaw Youths Council has taken a bold step in inaugurating a regional security outfit, Niger Delta Special Defense, NDSD.
Speaking at an annual Ijaw Youths gathering in Port Harcourt, the IYC president, Peter Ibifagha explained the imperative for the security outfit in providing intel and support to state security operatives.
The IJAW Youths Congress IYC is a regional Youths socio-cultural organization with national spread.
The Youths group acted in response to series of sea piracy incidents, kidnappings and other vices that take place in the maritime corridors of the Niger Delta Region, to assist the securing the area which is a difficult terrain. The IYC President Peter Ibifagha, while inaugurating the outfit, stated that their mandate is to provide intel and support the security agencies.
On the issue of weather or not there is legal backing for the outfit, Ibifagha has this to say.
Recent security breaches in the region including sea piracy and kidnappings have been blamed on lack of collaboration between the locals and the Security Agencies but the new move by the Youths organization promises to make all the difference.
