The leadership of the Ogoni Peoples Assembly (OPA) has commended president Muhammadu Buhari on the approval of phase one Ogoni power project, a landmark project in the ongoing Ogoni clean-up exercise.
The group made the commendation during its Executive Council meeting held in Bori, the headquarters of Ogoni land.
It will be recalled that President Buhari had recently approved the construction of power projects that will connect the entire Ogoni communities to the National Grid, a development the Ogoni Peoples Assembly believes will stimulate economic activities and create employment opportunities for Ogonis.
The group leader, Probel Williams, commended President Buhari, the Minister of Environment Alhaji Mohammed Abdullahi, and the Project Coordinator HYPREP Dr. Ferdinand Giadom for facilitating and approving.
The commencement of work at the project says that the power project when completed, will stimulate economic activities and create employment opportunities for teeming youths and residents of Ogoni communities.
“We in Ogoni Peoples Assembly believe this power project is conceived at a time when Ogonis are in dire need of economic recovery.
We are saying that the power project will create new frontiers for rapid economic growth and so we want to use this medium to call on the Minister and the Project Coordinator to ensure that the project is delivered mandate.”
Also speaking the Secretary of the Ogoni Peoples Assembly, Dr. Evidence Ep-aaBari Enoch further reiterated that the power project is consistent with the dream of every Ogoni.
Stressing that the project when completed will ultimately promote peace in Ogoniland, and enhance economic development through skilled and unskilled entrepreneurship, industrial growth, and overall prosperity of the people of Ogoniland.
“We in OPA wish to commend the President of Nigeria for the approval of the construction of the power project. This demonstration of the Government’s willingness to improve the lives of the Ogoni people through this project is strategic and timely.
Ogoni Peoples Assembly on behalf of the entire Ogoniland wishes to thank President Muhammadu Buhari, the Minister of Environment, and Dr. Ferdinand for the commitment deployed in initiating the project and for decisive steps taken in securing its approval.
“We commend the Management of HYPREP for being resolute and committed to its work plan towards the realization of the power project in Ogoniland ” he added.
Rev. Probel described it as: “This power project is dream come true and will be delighted to have Mr. President coming to flag off the power project at completion, Ogoni Specialist and Cottage Hospital Center of Excellence and Integrated Waste Management Center with the hope of commissioning before the end of his tenure.”
Npress Correspondent Promise Bebu, remarks that undoubtedly, the Ogoni Power Project will provide sustainability to the Water Scheme and help facilitate the restoration of the Ogoni environment, employment and empowerment opportunities.
It will come along with a substantial number of our youths who will become productive and self-reliant and will provide a model for the cleanup of other oil-producing areas in Nigeria.
