French airstrike killed 19 at wedding party in Mali

UN probe concludes French air attack hit a wedding celebration with 100 civilians, contradicting French military claims it targeted ‘terrorists’.

A UN investigation says that a French airstrike in Mali killed 19 civilians in January.

France’s defence ministry denies the allegation, saying only Islamist militants were hit.

Locals say a helicopter fired upon people attending a wedding near the village of Bounti in central Mali.

The UN report also says three armed men were killed – the full document is due to be released later on Tuesday.

As Mali’s former colonial power, France has more than 5,000 military personnel in the northern Sahel region as part of a long-running operation intended to stop violence by Islamist militants.
