Fmr MOSOP leader commends HYPREP BoT Chairman

The Former President of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People, (MOSOP), comrade Legborsi Piagbara has described the act of generosity by Dr. Mike Nwilaghi, as a means to spread peace, harmony, and a sense of togetherness.

Piagbara, who stated this while commending Dr. Mike Nwilaghi, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hydrocarbon Pollution and Remediation Project, (HYPREP), for his kind support to the less privileged, added that in the process of sharing ”we can lift off the burden from others”.

MOSOP is an Ogoni-based Non-Governmental Organization made up of the Ogoni ethnic Minority people of Rivers, with the mandate to campaign non-violently to promote democratic awareness, protect the environment of the Ogoni people, seek social, economic, and physical development for the region, protect the cultural rights and practices and seek appropriate rights of self-determination for the Ogoni people.

The former President explained that the spirit of sharing can help liftoff the burden from others, especially when shared with the less privileged.

“For me, I think I’ve also learned my lessons, I’ve not been doing it this way but I think maybe henceforth I’ll be doing mine this way. Maybe I’ve been doing little so I’ll even expand and increase in what I’ve been doing.

“It’s nice and good that we encourage the spirit of sharing. It’s only in sharing that we can liftoff the burden from others and in that way we can promote harmony and peace in the society.

“Just like the Priest said, Dr. Mike Nwilaghi may not be the richest man here he has just decided to share things for the people and that is what we encourage particularly at this season that God himself had to send down His Son just to reconcile man back to Himself.

Speaking to Npress, Piagbara however noted that, the approval of the Ogoni Power Projects by the Federal Government was not an initiative of the President, but rather an initiative of HYPREP to electrify Ogoni land.

“This whole discussion started as far back as 2017 when the then Minister for Environment Mrs Amina Mohammed engaged with necessary authorities in Nigeria to start our process.

“It is a process and because of the procurement requirements, the Governing Council cannot approve anything between one to five hundred, anything beyond that threshold will go to the Federal Executive Council for approval so, that is why it got to the President.

“He approved it and we are thankful for that but my fear is that people are confusing this thing as if the Federal Government is doing Ogoni people any special privilege, it’s not so! It is an initiative of the Ogoni people.

“The money that will be used for the project is coming from the Ogoni Trust Fund. so that needs to be clear, it is a Fund established by the contributing partners so it is not that the Federal Government is giving a special Fund to do electricity projects, that is not correct” he stated.
