Court sentences 3 to death by hanging over murder in Port Harcourt

A High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has sentenced three to death by hanging for the kidnap and murder of former director of finance and supply, State Ministry of Health, Charles Wogu, and Chief Promise Wali.

The three convicts, Andy Clement Ogbu, Goddrey Handson and Chima Nwokoma, were facing a nine-count charge of conspiracy and murder after eleven years of trial.

The presiding judge, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, while delivering the judgment said the prosecution substantially proved their case against the three convicts.

The Nigerian Press gathered that Justice Enebeli earlier in his judgment discharged and acquitted the 3rd defendant, Obinna Okerefor, and 6th defendant Ogechi Ihunwo. He said the prosecution team failed to provide substantial evidence against the two defendants on conspiracy and kidnapping charges.

He further struck out charges brought against the 4th defendant, late Rowland Azuka, who reportedly died at the correctional center during the trial of the matter.
